Built environment developer Kajima awarded VolkerFitzpatrick the £27 million design and build project to refurbish and extend 77 Coleman Street, a multi-use development in central London. The project began in April last year and includes the construction of 68,000ft2 of office space and over 16,000ft2 of retail and leisure space.

The topping out ceremony celebrated the building reaching ten storeys in height and was attended by senior members of Kajima UK, JR West Ltd, representatives from the design team and members of the VolkerFitzpatrick building division’s senior team, including Anthony Clarke, Nick Cole and managing director, Stuart Deverill.

To mark the occasion, the final section of roof slab was poured by both Stuart Deverill and John Harcourt, head of property for Kajima, followed by a few words.

The ceremony continued with a lunch, accompanied by impressive views from the 38th floor of London’s 30 St Mary Axe skyscraper (better known as ‘The Gherkin’).

John Harcourt said: “The success of a project such as this comes down to three things, the first is attention to detail: getting everything right up front and doing your homework. The second is getting the right detail in the build stage, for which we have VolkerFitzpatrick to thank, and the third is luck. We have a great team here and with all these aspects combined, the project is taking great shape.”
