Easing of congestion a priority on M1 to Luton Airport works

Work carried out by principal contractor VolkerFitzpatrick is well underway on huge changes to a busy roundabout in Luton connecting Airport Way to the M1.

The roundabout connecting Junction 10A of the M1 is in the process of being  removed and two roundabouts are due to be constructed connecting an underpass through the M1 Spur road.

The scheme under construction is an 18 month process, with work due to finish in April 2015. Changes were brought about to ease congestion on the busy stretch leading to Luton airport and connecting roads. Two ponds on the outskirts of the roundabout will also be constructed next to one of the new smaller roundabouts, in order to store excess storm water.

Commenting on the development, project manager Ben Murphy said:

"This is a project that is well on target for the expected completion date in April next year. It's  been absolutely vital to the traffic going to and from Luton airport that this redeveloped through road is done with motorists and Luton residents in mind, as well as the safety of our workers. That's why there's currently a temporary dual carriageway in place and a 30 mile an hour speed limit throughout the works."
