The event is free to attend, and visitors who book a place will learn about the works currently being undertaken on-site, as well as plans for developing the bypass between now and summer 2018. They will also get an inside look at what it is like to work on a construction site and learn about the different types of roles required for a project such as this.

After an induction and safety briefing, visitors will head out on a tour of the site. They will then have the opportunity to ask questions about the project, the site and what it is like to work within the construction industry.

Ben Joyce, project manager for VolkerFitzpatrick’s Civils division said: “This is a great opportunity to witness the start of what promises to be a technically and logistically inspiring civil engineering project. Visiting Ely during the Open Doors event will give anyone considering a career in civil engineering or construction a chance to see what is involved when working in the industry and how rewarding it can be.”

Councillor Ian Bates, chair of the economy and environment committee for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “Cambridgeshire County Council is delighted to support this event and to encourage the local community and especially local schools and colleges to get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at this exciting construction project. We also welcome the opportunity to encourage more people into the field of civil engineering and construction, and have outlined our commitment to this by ensuring that a number of apprenticeships were made available as part of the Ely Southern Bypass scheme.”

Please note that booking is essential for this event and visitors will not be admitted without pre-booking a place. Places are filling up fast, so visitors should book now to avoid disappointment. For more information and to book, visit: www.opendoors.construction/site/451
