VolkerFitzpatrick Completes Major Redevelopment of TfL’s Kingston Bus Station

VolkerFitzpatrick is proud to announce the successful completion of a major redevelopment project at Kingston Cromwell Road bus station, carried out in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and the Royal Borough of Kingston. This extensive £16.5 million project has transformed the bus station into a modern, multi-use facility that significantly enhances both passenger and staff experiences.

Originally opened in the 1990s, the newly completed Kingston bus station now meets the growing needs of the local community. The redesign not only improves accessibility and safety but also incorporates the latest technology, making the station more energy-efficient and better equipped to handle increased passenger numbers.

The redevelopment included the demolition of the old station and the construction of new multi-use retail buildings, alongside upgraded staff and passenger facilities. The station now features improved high- and low-level lighting, fully accessible bus stops, and a new low-level canopy made of lightweight steel, supported by a brick plinth, which provides a sheltered waiting environment for passengers and pedestrians.

Sustainable Design

Key environmental and safety enhancements were also a major focus of the project with state-of-the-art Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS), canopy planting, green roofs, permeable paving, solar panels and energy-efficient LED lighting.

The redesigned station includes two accessible bus stops, a customer information office, and live information screens at both ends of the station. The expanded passenger island offers more space for customers to wait and move around comfortably. Additionally, the station now provides a fully accessible toilet, two new retail spaces, and enhanced accommodation for TfL staff and bus drivers.

“We’re thrilled to have delivered a more accessible, modern, and energy-efficient bus station for the local community. Working in close collaboration with the Royal Borough of Kingston and TfL, the successful completion of this project reflects our commitment to quality and sustainability, and we are confident that the upgraded station will serve the community well for years to come.”

Community support

As a part of this project, VolkerFitzpatrick delivered significant social value initiatives demonstrating a strong commitment to community support, education, and workforce development. The project team exceeded required expectations by dedicating 20 staff days to educational engagement, collaborating with Kingston College and Holyfield Secondary School to inspire students about careers in construction and raise awareness of industry opportunities.

The project also prioritised local employment opportunities, recruiting London-based workers and investing over £1 million in Kingston and London SMEs, ensuring economic benefits reached the local community. These initiatives reflect VolkerFitzpatrick’s dedication to creating lasting positive impacts beyond the construction project.
