Starting in May 2019, the £34 million contract saw the team construct an aircraft hangar at Farnborough Airport for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).

Led by senior project manager, Jon Evans, the team designed and constructed a purpose-built 220,060ft2 maintenance hangar, to house up to 16 Gulfstream business jets. The building includes three floors of office space, customer experience areas and a café. The base structure is composed of a steel frame, on top of concrete pad foundations, with 67m trusses over the hangar doors.

The detailed scope of work included several specialist services, hangar doors, cranes and a deluge foam sprinkler system. External works included a new car park to connect to the airport’s perimeter road.

In addition, the team was responsible for the demolition and the reconstruction of an external apron, which tied into the taxiway, along with associated lighting and service installation.

Jon Evans, project manager for VolkerFitzpatrick, said: “The team has done a fantastic job in difficult circumstances and Gulfstream has been a great client to collaborate with. There’s been a great spirit of teamwork throughout and I’m proud of the innovative, cost-saving and efficient solutions that have been delivered.”
