VolkerFitzpatrick project's shortlisted for two BCI awards

The prestigious British Construction Industry Awards (BCI) 2024, hosted by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and New Civil Engineer, has shortlisted two projects VolkerFitzpatrick has played an instrumental role in.

The Barking Riverside Overground Station and Pier project has been shortlisted in the category, ‘Transport Project of the Year’. The MSVF joint venture of VolkerFitzpatrick and Morgan Sindall infrastructure built the new Barking Riverside station for Transport for London (TfL). This included an extensive glazed façade and involved the construction of a 1.5km viaduct. The new line delivers significant infrastructure, connecting with mainline rail lines, highways, HS1 tunnels, an operational goods yard, as well as a major development.

The University Station Redevelopment in Birmingham has been shortlisted in the category, ‘Placemaking Project of the Year’.  VolkerFitzpatrick undertook the detailed design and build of University Station on behalf of West Midlands Combined Authority. It provides an attractive modern gateway into the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus and nearby hospital site, it supports regeneration activities in the area, increases passenger capacity and provides improved access to the rail network.

The BCI describes these awards for the built environment sector as seeking to, “Recognise and reward excellence in project delivery and, crucially, delivering positive outcomes for society”. They add that they are designed to, “Celebrate the hard work and dedication of the whole project team – from clients, architects, designers and contractors”.   

The winners of the awards will be announced on 9th October 2024 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London. It is judged by an independent panel of over 100 experts, who ensure “integrity and rigour in the awards process”.
