Craigentinny depot modifications
As part of their Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP), Network Rail are delivering electrification across a large portion of the Scottish rail network, as well as the modernisation of key junctions and infrastructure.
The programme includes the electrification of routes through Craigentinny rail depot, which will in turn open up the depot to service Hitachi’s fleet of Class 385 trains.
Prior to the programme, the depot’s facilities were not equipped to maintain the new fleet. Hitachi appointed VolkerFitzpatrick to deliver a suite of modifications, which would enable them to not only service the new trains but also continue using their existing fleet.
The works included the installation of twenty-two 13m screw piles and construction of a 200m long gantry access platform, allowing vehicles to easily cross from one side of the depot to the other. VolkerFitzpatrick also installed 16 new train lifting jacks and a jib crane, which will allow Hitachi to offload train wheels directly from delivery vehicles onto their trains.
As a result of the improvements, Hitachi will be able to keep their new electric trains running in top condition, providing faster journeys and more seats for passengers in Scotland. In addition, a modernised depot protection system, installed by VolkerFitzpatrick, will help them to ensure the ongoing safety of their workforce.

This will protect long-term jobs at the location, and provide Edinburgh with a rail depot packed full of modern technology”.
