Lewisham Gateway site wide infrastructure

VolkerFitzpatrick delivered the highway infrastructure required to support an exciting new development at the heart of Lewisham town centre, creating new jobs and homes for local people, on behalf of Lewisham Gateway Developments Ltd.

The Lewisham Gateway project involves the development of the area into a more vibrant and better connected town centre.

The scheme replaces Lewisham’s northern roundabout with a new highway layout known as the Low H. The Low H concept introduces a vastly enhanced public space and substantially improves the pedestrian connectivity of the stations to Lewisham town centre and other surrounding areas.

The Low H concept also significantly improves interchanges between bus and rail and offers considerable operational benefits over the existing layout for buses in terms of priority, stop accessibility and stop capacity.

As part of the reconfigured highways, Molesworth Street and Lewisham High Street will be realigned to form the western and eastern edges of the site. They will be linked together by a new road, with signal controlled junctions at both ends and a major signal controlled pedestrian crossing in the middle.  Signal controlled junctions will also be installed on the Molesworth Street / Loampit Vale junction as well as the Lewisham Road / Station Road junction.

As the works progresses, some temporary lane suspensions will be used and the northern roundabout will remains in place until the new roads are built. As the new roads are completed, traffic will be diverted onto them before the old roads are removed. This will minimise disruption to nearby businesses and the travelling public as it will still be possible to drive, walk and cycle through the site.
