Radlett Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI)

VolkerFitzpatrick have started to construct the first stage of the Radlett Strategic Rail Freight Interchange on behalf of SEGRO. The new interchange will be served from the Midlands Mainline railway via a new two road rail connection.

VolkerFitzpatrick is currently working on the £72 million rail contract, incorporating a new underpass as well as overhead line equipment works, lineside civils, installation of switches and crossings for the main line connection and signalling. The underpass is essential not only to enable further works on the project but will also carry the two road rail line feed into a new rail terminal area and allow the construction of 7 distribution units, the largest being 1.2 million ft2.

The new 60-metre precast underbridge structure, currently being constructed next to the rail line, when completed will weigh over 6000 tonnes will slowly be moved through an excavation under the rail line during a Network Rail 9-day blockade over the 2024 Christmas period.

The rail line will remain open for much of the duration of the whole project, with the majority of possessions being carried out over night to minimise disruption to passengers. Meticulous planning and co-ordination has been established to enable the completion of the tight timeframe.

Sustainability and Wider Aims

Social Value

VolkerFitzpatrick will provide employment opportunities over the course of the project. As well as the companies head office being based locally, they are working with supply chain contractors from the surrounding area, they will engage with local educational establishments and provide a number of apprenticeship placements.

Wider Radlett SRFI project

The vision for SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett is to create 335,000 sq m of state-of-the-art, sustainable logistics space, enabled by a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) on site, enveloped in 250 hectares of managed woodland, conservation grazing and public country park.

It will serve as a vital hub for the efficient movement of goods and will include the construction of extensive rail infrastructure, warehousing, and distribution facilities, all designed to support the growing demand for rail freight services.
Currently, rail freight contributes £1.7 billion to the UK economy, with each train removing up to 76 HGV journeys from Britain’s roads, helping to ease congestion and meet the country`s decarbonisation targets.
