Sussex Line train lengthening programme
The Sussex Line train lengthening programme was one of many packages delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick under Network Rail’s Multi Asset Framework Agreement in the south east region. This package was to design and construct 40m long platform extensions along the Sussex Line.
VolkerFitzpatrick was appointed to design and build 29 platform extensions at 15 Sussex route stations, between Wandsworth Common and Sutton. This project was to be delivered in only 20 months with the operation of longer, 10-car rolling stock by Southern Railway coming into service from December 2013. The works to the platforms included permanent way modifications, signalling, platform construction, lighting, retail communication, operational communication and electrical track equipment.
The team undertook the development of detailed, value engineered designs for each station to deliver buildable, safe and cost effective solutions. Platform design choices at each of the 15 stations ranged from conventional cross-wall to using fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) components, to address cost and time constraints. FRP construction was the preferred solution as it allowed us to prefabricate the components off site and deliver them to site in kit form for quick and easy installation. This reduced the need for heavy plant and allowed for installation within short pre-arranged possession periods.
Works were executed across multiple locations simultaneously to keep the number of possessions to an absolute minimum, reducing disruption along the line. Our planners kept in regular contact with suppliers and subcontractors co-ordinating logistics and facilitating ‘just in time’ working.
