VolkerFitzpatrick is making significant progress on the refurbishment of the A13 River Lea Crossing.

Work began in August 2024 on this £14 million project, which aims to enhance the safety and reliability of the crossing by addressing critical maintenance needs. Refurbishment activities include strengthening the bridge structure and improving its overall condition, reducing the need for frequent and disruptive repairs.

Road Management Services (RMS), responsible for the operation and maintenance of a 25km section of the A13, including the River Lea Crossing, has appointed VolkerFitzpatrick to lead the refurbishment.

Since starting work below the bridge, VolkerFitzpatrick has installed navigation channels in the River Lea and scaffolding for access. They have begun replacing the 16 steel arch ribs that support the bridge and are removing paint in preparation for repainting.

Above the bridge deck, work is over halfway complete, and phase three of traffic management has begun is imminent. Lane restrictions will remain until June 2025, with two lanes always open in each direction. Overnight closures are necessary between phases to safely adjust traffic management, with a signed diversion route in place.

"We're making great progress on strengthening the crossing, reducing future disruptions for road users. We understand its importance to the community and will continue engaging throughout the project. Our team is also committed to local support, from volunteering at Cody Dock to donating to local food banks. We look forward to keeping you updated as we deliver this vital project."
