VolkerFitzpatrick completes £84 million state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Corby

VolkerFitzpatrick recently completed two state-of-the-art units for GLP totalling £84 million in Corby. The construction included a distribution warehouse and a manufacturing centre - Europe’s largest modular home facility for TopHat. GLP’s Magna Park Corby is one of the UK’s largest logistics and distribution parks. The two design and build contracts included the construction of one 660,000ft2 unit and one 591,000ft2 unit, each equating to the size of over eleven football pitches.

Both state-of-the-art buildings consist of a portal steel frame superstructure spanning over 32m over 6 bays with built-up cladding system, curtain walling and glazing system on office elevations to improve natural lighting, and pre-cast concrete dock levellers. Externally, a new road junction, bus-stops and cycle-paths have been created, along with landscaping in keeping with the area.

Stuart Deverill, Managing Director, building division commented: “We’re delighted to continue our collaborative relationship with GLP to deliver these facilities at Magna Park Corby. The specialist preconstruction advice, excellent teamwork and efficient methods of working have ensured the projects have been delivered within the scheduled timeframe and to budget.”

VolkerFitzpatrick has also positively impacted the local area, which falls within the top 20 percent of the most deprived areas in England.

David Rowell, Project Manager at our 660,000ft2 unit commented: “As well as donating £20,000 worth of food to the local food bank over the course of the project, we worked with local schools and community, and have provided apprenticeship opportunities at both sites, leaving a lasting legacy long after the project has been completed.”

The business also successfully reduced fuel wastage by a third (34%) during the project. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the installation of a trial of fuel monitoring systems. This also resulted in considerable savings in costs and reductions in carbon emissions and usage recommendations have been shared across other divisions within the VolkerFitzpatrick business portfolio.
